LIGHT IS REALLY THE SOURCE OF ALL BEING
Architecture is about beautiful buildings! It is born in light: the play of sunlight across materials, textures and colours. After two centuries Australians are still struggling to adapt architecture to the peculiar characteristics of Australian light, to respond adequately to its piercing clarity. Our habits of seeing, formed in England where the light is softer, need to be reassessed.
The John Hamilton Doyle practice clearly sees architecture as belonging to a unique place. In Australia we are pioneering a new informal, even extroverted lifestyle, where the garden assumes an important role. It is a remarkable opportunity to create a new “green” way of living through the agency of fresh thinking. We leave behind the notion of volumes and masses playing in light and engage translucent and transparent layers filtering and shielding, dissolving and redefining boundaries between inside and out.
The examples that follow illustrate a range of innovations over 30 years by the Doyle practice that were created to enrich daily life through fine orchestration of materials and forms in light.
On a practical note, Doyle has found it advantageous to be appointed the builder where this is OK with clients. He can see the job through to completion. There is just the one person to contact and assume responsibility. Clients often experience difficulty appreciating the final impact of their project. His way of working allows a client to participate more directly during the construction. The client/s become active co-partners in realising their plans.
